Blog #1 Quiz and Discrimination Videos
The quiz was interesting, and it was fun to hear different accents and voices but thought I would have recognized more than I did. I was aware of the problem of racial discrimination in housing from real estate classes I took. It was a big deal in class and our teachers stressed over and over the importance of never discriminating based on race, whether you base it on their looks, accent etc. not only because it is wrong, but also because there are nasty fees and you can loose your real estate license. Unfortunately there are still people who discriminate, as shown in the video of the man making the same phone call but using different accents. I think people may discriminate based on dialect because they are not familiar with the culture or race of the person they are discriminating against and they fear what is not familiar. I think another reason is that they don't want to stop and take the time to try and learn more about the person or culture or understand them and so they remain ignorant. It really bothers me when people treat others with so much disregard. I think the people in the videos had every reason to be upset, everyone's rights should be respected. While the 20/20 clip's findings were disturbing, I'm glad to see their efforts to make more people aware of this problem in order to stop it!

I think you're right, that ignorance has a lot to do with discrimination. It seems that the 20/20 video was, like a lot of news, focusing on the shocking aspect to keep viewers interested. Based on your experiences in real estate classes, it would be wrong to assume that all real estate agents do this, just like how it's wrong for the people in the videos (and anyone, really) to discriminate based on race (more specifically, discriminating against a race based on the vocal trends of that race).

It's surprising how many people didn't know about discrimination in the real estate world and don't know about the FHA. It's obvious that one of the reasons we discriminate is ignorance. It is probably taught in real estate classes to be aware of discrimination so that there is no excuse for a real estate agent but I'm sure it still happens.
