Ethnography

In trying to decide what culture to do my ethnography on I have narrowed it down to just a few. The main one is the homeless culture. I'm having a little bit of difficulty figuring out how to immerse myself in the culture. I've thought of doing volunteer work or some kind of an interview, but I haven't figured out how to truly understand the homelessness and the impact they have on language. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Volunteer work is a great way to immerse yourself in this culture. I used to volunteer on Fridays at St. Vincent's soup kitchen and really enjoyed getting to know some of the 'regulars'. St. Vincent's has food prep and serving shifts, and if you work on the serving line you'll have more than ample opportunity to engage yourself with these people. If you pursue this route, I recommend working on the dinner shift as you'll be able to actually sit down at the tables and talk to people. I found this community eager to connect and talk about themselves as so few people listen... I think some have forgotten their voices. Also, you may be surprised to find what varieties of people show up for free dinners. It's not just the 'bum' on the street, it's mothers, fathers, children, and teenagers from low and middle class areas. Good luck!!
