I was quite suprised when I was taking the racial profling quiz that I got 2 of them right. Apparently I don't get that people of other races speak differently, so I feel quite confident that I wouldn't discriminate if someone of a different race was trying to rent an apartment from me over the phone.
The thing that I found very interesting in the HUD video was that guy can do so many types of accents. I couldn't do an accent for a million dollars. Thats probably why I failed the racial profiling quiz.
In that 20/20 video it made me wondered what sort of punishment happens to those who are caught discriminating. That women seemed pretty mad that she couldn't rent that aparment but if that was me I probably wouldn't have taken it that far. I would probably just call that women some mean name and continue looking for another apartment.
In the avoiding linguistic discrmination video I just thought that guy must have a lot of time on his hands. What he said though was I thought was true. When people ask you to speak correctly, whose to say what correctly is?

Yes and who is to say what normal is? To those being discriminated against, theirs is probably the normal world not ours! It is fun to try to put yourself in other's shoes sometimes.
I had quite the same experience with the quiz, and am just fine with missing most of the answers.
I think that's a good question to ask who is to say what is being said correctly. The people who do that are the prescriptivists. Though I can see the purpose of creating rules in speech. With organization and structure we are on a similar plane of communication.
