Taking the racial profiling quiz was very interesting. I got most of the answers right. I think I did good on this quiz because English is my second language, and therefore I can hear the differences better. I noticed that sometimes I have a problem to understand people of different races that is why I remember them.
The Fair Housing video was brilliant. There is no way I could ever try to speak with different English accents. The video shows flagrant discrimination of people renting the apartments. I have never thought about linguistic discrimination. I am white but European. Nobody knows that I am not American until I say something. It makes me feel scared to even try to negotiate something on the phone here in US.
The second video about the woman also shows discrimination that is unbelievable for me. All of the blacks applying for the house were discriminated and the whites were not. By assuming that I am white there should be no problem for me to get the house. But if they heard me on a phone they would probably say "Where is this weird accent from?" or they would not even think about it and would say "NO" just because it does not sound American.
The last video with the guy and the cat seemed to me funny. According to my opinion, the main idea of this video is to be opened and patient to people even if you struggle to understand what they are saying. Do not give up on them or do not close the door for them. Just listen.
I think people discriminate because of world sterotyping. E.g. Latinos are said to be lazy and irresponsible.
