Communicative characteristics of internet chatting

I came across a short article during lunch just now and found its relevance to our discussions in class today particular apt.

Click here to go the article and see for yourself....

For those who haven't already clicked the link and left me behind, it is a short piece on a leading European research site concerning a recent study just published in book form concerning the communicative characteristics of chatting on the internet. Here is a except:

"In his study, for which he got his PhD with honors from Culture Studies in March 2007, Beißwenger examines the differences between chats and oral conversations and the effects they have on the manner in which chatters organize their linguistic exchange."

You will notice that the story is just a "stub." For more in depth details on the project, you are welcome to go right here...

But you had better be able to read German! ^^

(if you can, please consider sharing what you find out with the rest of the class in the comments section)

Thanks Micah. I don't read German so I can't help there, but I will say this kind of study is exactly the type of project/ethnography one might pursue in this class. Certainly all the projects do not need to focus on the impact of technology on language but they could. And all projects will need to describe language and make comparisons.

I think the study reinforces some things I've noticed about my own writing when communicating through the internet. I would go over a text I was sending someone and screen out superfluous details. I think it varies people of course. I speak German, but just took a look at the English article.
