Racial Profiling

I have to say that I had not really thought that about how people can be descriminated against, even just calling on the phone to inquire for something just as simple as say for an apartment to see if it is availabe. It is actually very shocking to me.

It was interesting taking the racial profiling quiz and how I could tell some of the voices that were reciting the nursery ryme "Mary had a little lamb" and the differences that were between the different voices. The wierd things is that I was able to pick out what type of racial ethnicity some were more than others. It made me think of how I judge people upom the way that they're voice may sound.

The HUD video I thought at first was funny, a guy imitating the way that peoples voices sound. But, then I realized that the person on the other phone was telling every time that he called and imitated a different voice, just how serious of a nature this is. It is real. People are dealing with this everyday. When it came down and the person used is own voice and called she said that something was available. This wrong.

I found the 20/20 segment to be very interesting on how they determined that the lady was being discriminated against. How they called the same place and how many blacks were discriminated against and whites were not.

I thought that the movie that involved the man trying to listen to his cat was interesting and was one of the simplest ways to explain how much of this is going on in the world. We need to try to listen to one another and be patient. I believe if this were to happen, the world would be a much brighter and happier place. It is tragic that this is going on everyday.

I didn't do too well on the quiz. I don't know if that means I haven't met very many people who don't speak similar to me or if I'm just not a good judge of race through voices. Watching the HUD video made me realize how difficult it must be to be descriminated by how you speak. I also feel ashamed because I've done a bit of my own judging when I hear people speak.

I think we descriminate based on dialect because of the environment we've grown up in in our homes and the area and people around us. If we choose to think that the way a person speaks is bad or good and defines who someone is and values, then that is our choice. But that should be kept to ourselves so that when it comes to buying a home or something, no one is turned away.
