Don't flag me as a racist but I got 8-10 on the quiz, dirty call center experiences! I have to tell you it becomes very apparent as to the race of a person by his or her voice. Something about the word usage, tones and accents that give them away. It is a tragedy that people can be assessed labeled and judged the instant they open their mouth. As if visual profiling weren't enough! Although, having lived in Romania for 2 years gave me a good perspective on languages and their sounds or intonations. So, when I got back to the states it made it easier to pickup on the blatant differences in dialect or race.
Don't judge a book by its cover right?
The housing discrimination video was amazing. I couldn't believe that he could do so many different voices. But it was obvious to see what the effect of the different accents were and that the renter had already made up her mind about who would be able to rent the apartment. It just makes me want to be more open in my dealings with others so that I don't end up doing the same thing.... profiling.

I think that just like how some people are able to see many distinct shades of a certain color while other people are only able to only see 1, that some people naturally have an easier time hearing differences in sound. The test probably wasn't designed to be a "racist-o-meter," and I don't think it's necessarily wrong to be able to make out different accents, because that doesn't mean you're going to make a racist judgment. Some people, like you, just have an aptitude for auditory discrimination.
Hey, someone using the genre conventions of a blog by inserting an image!
8/10 is amazing. I think I got 5/5 and I took it last year when teaching the course. I guess, to use Stephen's phrase, I don't have much in the way of "auditory discrimination." I wonder if this might have connections to musical training too.
